First Friday

presented by Global Credit Union

The arts and unique businesses are alive in Downtown Spokane and Global Credit Union's First Friday will showcase them on a monthly basis on the First Friday of every month. 

Enjoy an evening of drawings, paintings, prints, sculpture, ceramics, photography and other visual art. Take in diverse live performances, including music, dance and theatre and don't forget the exceptional shopping and dining Downtown has to offer.

ADAMS STREET AREA

Barrister Winery, 1213 W. Railroad Ave., Presenting the art of Father Bruno, the beloved former assistant dean at Gonzaga University who ran the Gonzaga-in-Florence program for 23 years. A portion of the proceeds from art sales go to Father Bruno’s outreach to Africa by donating money to orphanages and families with special needs. Fr. Bruno’s works portray Florence, Tuscany and Pacific Northwest landscapes utilizing an abstract style with emphasis on color and line. Arist's reception, 5-7pm “Lonesome” Lyle Morse plays acoustic Blues, 7-10pm.

Kolva/Sullivan Gallery, 115 S. Adams St., Presenting photographs by Pullman artist Zach Mazur. Zach is influenced by the changing landscape and relationship of natural and man-influenced environments. His evocative photos portray the on-going changes resulting from man’s activity in the Northwest. Through December 27

 Julie Elaine Studio, 115 S Adams St (upper level in studio 4) Presenting photography by Brittany Soto and Jo Ann Acosta. Featuring images in black and white, color and vibrant Giclee on canvas from New York, Japan and Colorado. Offering holiday special- BUY ONE GET ONE FREE. Artist reception 5-8pm.

Trackside Studio, 115 S. Adams St., Featuring hand made pottery and sculpture by Chris Kelsey and Mark Moore.

Lorinda Knight Gallery, 523 W. Sprague, Oil paintings on panel by Kathleen Cavender featured in an exhibit titled “Condensation.” Through December 24. A reception for the artist, 6-8pm. *The gallery will be closed for vacation from December 25 through January 5.

DOWNTOWN CORE AREA

Arbor Crest Tasting Room , 808 W. Main, River Park Square, Third Level, Featuring Wayne and Susan Girten from Artique Expressions, showing artistic copper fountains and garden art, as well as painted glass and dinnerware. Vocals and guitar by Cheryl Branz, playing selections from her Christmas Album, and other selections, 6-8:30pm.

Argentum Aurum, 524 W. Main, Symbolic Alchemy. Jewelry made to express an inner voice. Our work incorporates the unusual, speaks to the real, and expresses human truths, every piece made by us. Discover Something Different.

Artisans’ Wares, 808 W Main, River Park Square, Second level, Showing handmade ornaments from local artists and studios across the USA. And happy to show new jewelry by Laura Dahl back in Spokane, through Dec. 31. New to the gallery are fused glass pieces by Spokane artist Jan Hoak. Mon-Sat 10-9, Sun 11-6.

Brick Wall Gallery, Bennett Block, Main & Howard, 2nd Floor skywalk level, Featuring award-winning landscape photographer Charles Gurche, whose work has appeared in of Audubon, National Geographic, Sierra Club, Smithsonian and nine books including Washington, Wild and Beautiful. Fred Hilker will play acoustic guitar finger-style originals, 6-8pm.

Global Credit Union, 726 W. Riverside, Varying artwork on display through windows.

Labor of Love Creations, 808 W. Main, 2nd level, River Park Square, Stop in for a cozy evening filled with warm wassail and beautifully scented candles and potpourri. Introducing new word art pieces featuring Christmas sentiments and classic expressions. Knowledgeable staff on hand to aid in designing your own one-of-a-kind pieces, and Eliie from “Ellie's Edibles” sampling many of her divine caramel creations including her famous brandy caramel sauce! 5-9pm

Madeleine’s Café & Patisserie, 707 W. Main, Special performance by Shoemaker! With pastels by Mercia Sheets. Kevin Gardner & Spare Parts play on Saturday, December 6.

Simply Northwest, 8 N. Post, Featuring the works of woodturner, Billy Goldsberry and sampling northwest foods. 10am-5:30pm.

Spokane Athletic Club, 1002 W. Riverside, Cutter Lounge, Exhibiting original works by Gordon Wilson, an incorporator of the Spokane Studio School. He has taught a variety of courses at Whitworth University including his specialty teaching areas of drawing, painting and figure drawing. Live music, and hosted refreshments.

Spokane Transit Authority (STA), 701 W. Riverside (second floor), Featuring Oil paintings by Natalie Gauvin, through December 31. Harp music by Julie Smith and artist reception, 6pm.(Free) Tango Dance Lessons by Anne-Marie Burk, 7:30-9:30pm. (image right)

STCU, 707 W. Main, Skywalk level of the Crescent Court, A series of prints created by STCU's Lena Guttromson for the 2004-2008 Downtown Spokane Winter Carriage Rides.  2008 STCU carriage rides at Wall and Main, through December 24.  For more information on the artwork and horse and carriage rides, visit STCU.org .

Concept :: Home, 401 W. First Ave., Featuring Jeff Allison’s AbstractA. Jeff has found that by mixing different types of paint he can achieve textures and reactions not possible when using enamel or oil alone. Live music by Mark Schurtz.

Gina’s Design Corner, One N. Browne, See compelling Christmas and winter art painted and carved on recycled cardboard by local dumpster artist Jim Battell. Artists reception with refreshments. Exhibit runs through January 3

Pottery Place Plus Gallery, 602 N. Washington (main floor of Auntie’s), Featuring diverse works of wearable art by members of the Spokane Jewelry Guild and traditional black and white photography by Tobe Robbins. Reception 5-9pm. Both shows will through December 31.

Santé Restaurant & Charcuterie, 404 W. Main, (LibertyBuilding, next to Auntie’s), Featuring traditional black and white photography byTobe Robbins. Reception 5-9pm, through December 31.

Saranac Art Projects, 25 W. Main, Art Feeds the Homeless: The works of Harrell Fletcher and Marc Dombrosky, through December 27. Two artists practicing different forms of social engagement by exploring conflicting ideas of place and marginalized communities. Adjunct exhibit: Thomas O’Day, who focuses on the creation of works through the destruction of objects. Saranac Art Projects and Main Market Co-op collaborate to host this installation. Please bring a canned food donation as a citywide response to Governor Christine Gregoire's recently announced “Feeding Washington” initiative to help stock the food banks of Washington State.


UNIVERSITY DISTRICT

WSU Spokane, 668 N Riverpoint Blvd., first floor Phase I Classroom Building,  Featuring Norwegian Wood: The Thoughtful Architecture of Wenche Selmer, by Elisabeth Tostrup. Whether set along the picturesque coast of Norway or in its remote mountains and forests, architect Wenche Selmer’s wooden cabins and houses blend effortlessly into their surroundings. FIRST AVENUE AREA * 

Avenue West Gallery, 122 S. Monroe, Showcasing artist of the month, Marcia Marcuson and her impressionistic paintings in oil and watercolor. Her show, “Exploring the Elements,” focuses on the basic shapes, colors, and components of nature.  Artist reception, 5-9pm with ambiance added by Tracy Carr's guitar and singing, and refreshments.

NORTH BANK AREA

Antwiqu’ed, 309 W. Second Ave, Featuring artist Jennifer Zurlini “Blending Past and Present.” Acrylic works on large canvasses explore the emotive power of paint. Also featured, Jaque’s sculpture art and print work.

Browne’s Addition Wellness Center, 2013 W. 4th Ave., Featuring John Yerden’s figure drawings in charcoal, oil paintings in abstract forms, colors, and still lifes. John is a recent graduate of GU and teaches a figure drawing class there.

The MAC – Northwest Museum of Arts and Culture, 2316 W. First, Open special evening hours from 5-8 pm by donation. Exhibits: Toys! Toys!
